Prohibited items & dangerous goods
Prohibited items
To ensure air travel remains safe, there are a number of items that are prohibited from being carried in your hand luggage because they present an aviation security risk. Examples of prohibited items that cannot be taken on board an aircraft as carry-on baggage include sporting goods, kitchen utensils, tools, sharp items, blunt objects, flammable and household goods.A list of prohibited items can be found on the Australian Government's TravelSECURE website.
Each airline operates under its own Conditions of Carriage, which may indicate what you cannot take on board or pack in your checked baggage. You should check with your airline if you are unsure whether you can take a particular item on board.
You will be asked to surrender any prohibited items found in your hand luggage when passing through security screening. Failure to surrender an item when requested will result in you being unable to pass through to the terminal’s secure area and to travel.
All items surrendered at the security screening points at Perth Airport managed terminals (T1, T2, and T3) are auctioned throughout the year, with proceeds raised going to children's charities, including for the purchase of essential medical equipment for the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation.
Dangerous goods
There are some items that aren’t meant to fly at all as they pose a health or safety risk when transported by air. They range from the obvious - such as explosives and dangerous or volatile chemicals such as petrol and strong acids - to seemingly innocuous everyday items that can cause problems if not handled correctly, such as aerosols and batteries. For more information on what not to pack, please visit the Australian Government’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) website and check with your airline prior to travel.

Powder - fine dry particles (may also come in clumpy, grain or compressed forms)Liquid - a substance that is a liquid when at room temperature
Aerosol - a substance kept in a container under pressure
Gel - a jelly-like substance

Security at Perth Airport

The Australian Government regulates the security requirements at Australian airports, including at Perth Airport. Being a security controlled airport, every passenger and visitor passing through to secure areas, and their bags, are screened for prohibited items and dangerous goods.
It’s important to know exactly what you can and can’t take through security screening at the airport before you arrive. A little pre-planning can save you a lot of hassle when you arrive and ensure you get through the security screening process as quickly as possible.

Where to exchange money in Perth

If you’ve managed to avoid the airport, and you’d rather not use an ATM, there are various foreign exchange companies you can use. These include UAE Exchange Australia, Exchange Now and RedRate Exchange.
Keep in mind that there's no such thing as a fee-free foreign exchange transaction. While a company may claim it doesn’t charge fees or earn a commission, it probably builds its profit into the exchange rate. You can easily measure whether a company is offering you a fair deal by comparing its exchange rate to the live mid-market rate.

Where to Sleep
Precinct T1/T2 seems to provide better sleeping options, as T3/T4 is described as having limited comfortable seating and a midnight closure. T1 reportedly has many armrest-free benches throughout, as well as some comfortable sofas with headrests in the arrivals section. Noise, such as the annoying “Beware of unattended baggage” intercom announcement, is a primary complaint, so bring earplugs/noise-cancelling headphones.
Explore our guide to sleeping in Perth Airport or read some traveller reviews for more tips. For uninterrupted sleep, there are sleep pods inside Terminal 1 and hotels near the airport. See Airport Hotels in the airport guide below.
