The playground design is based on natural features in keeping with the landscape at the National Arboretum. The Pod Playground has sensory exploration pods for smaller children and a challenging series of bridges connecting to large acorn-shaped cubbies and twisty slides for older children…and brave parents. An absolute must-visit.

3. Cockington Green Gardens

It’s a small world at Cockington Green Gardens, which features a model village and miniatures of iconic buildings from around the globe.

This is one for the whole family with miniature cricket grounds for the budding sports players, fairy-tale castles for the Princesses in training and fascinating replicas of international architecture for the ‘culture vultures’.

If you are visiting with preschoolers or young primary schoolers then this may prove to be the best of all the things to do in Canberra with kids.

4. Canberra Space Centre at Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex

The Canberra Space Centre is in the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex and is located about a 40-minute drive from Canberra. It is a must-see in Canberra for budding space enthusiasts.

The complex is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network and is one of three tracking centres in the world which provide radio contact with the dozens of robotic spacecraft exploring the solar system.

The Space Centre is small but has lots of information about the exploration of space, what we know about the planets and details about being an astronaut. There are spacesuits, a piece of Moon rock and two theatres showing informative films. There’s some interesting trivia – like how astronauts go to the toilet in space!

Mr 4 is so obsessed with the planets and space at the moment that there was no way we were missing this – and he loved it despite it being more aimed at adults. Miss 6 wasn’t as impressed, but both J and I enjoyed it. They both were happy watching the films for a while.

For toddlers, there is an activity centre like the display to play with in the middle of one of the rooms. There are a playground and a cafe too and it’s our top choice of places to visit near Canberra.

5. Mini Golf King

Mini Golf King is a new indoor mini-golf venue inside the Canberra Outlet Centre in Fyshwick. It is the third mini-golf course to open in Canberra in the last two years, with Yarralumla Play Station and Jungle Glow-In-The-Dark Mini Golf also located around the city.

Mini Golf King brings a different experience to Canberra's mini golf scene - this venue is an enjoyable hour of fun and exciting challenges that the kids will get a real thrill out of, in all weather. For families in Canberra, it is also a welcome sight to see another indoor party venue for the winter months, as well as something else the whole family can enjoy together.

Like many families, our family is mini-golf enthusiasts - which is just a nice way to say that we are a little bit obsessed. If we go on holiday we will often seek out a new course and enjoy having a laugh whilst navigating tricky holes and challenging courses.

For us, it is a family activity that we can all enjoy - where our young daughter often gets so many fluke "hole in one's" that she often wins the game. When this new course opened at the Canberra Outlet Centre (September 10th, 2016), we couldn't wait to get in there to check it out.

Discover the unsung beauty of Australia’s capital city as you float overhead in a hot air balloon. After your 45 min -1-hour flight, celebrate your safe landing with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and a personalized flight certificate.

Your flight experience begins early in the morning at the Hyatt Hotel, centrally located on Commonwealth Ave, a two-minute walk from Parliament House.

You'll meet just before dawn as this is the best time to fly. From the Hyatt, you are taken to the launch site. It takes around 20-25 minutes for the balloon to be inflated and standing upright ready for boarding. You are welcome to help with the setup of the balloon or simply stand back and take photos as your aircraft takes shape and comes to life.

Dawn lift-off! As the new day dawns, you will ascend into the sky in your colourful balloon. Your balloon will float gently along with the breeze, whilst in your basket, you will feel completely secure with very little sensation of movement. During your flight, you may find yourself drifting just above the treetops then moments later effortlessly ascending to heights of 2000-feet or more.

Photography from the balloon is encouraged and you will be rewarded with stunning shots of Canberra, providing you with years of fond memories.

After approximately one hour you will be greeted by your ground crew as you touch back down to earth. The balloon is packed away with lots of laughs, then you hop back into one of the vehicles and return to the Canberra Hyatt. Enjoy a glass of Australian sparkling wine as you are presented with a commemorative flight certificate as part of our traditional ballooning celebration.

9. Get a Bird's Eye View at the Mt. Ainslie Lookout

Some would argue that the best view of the city can be had from this vantage point, as you can see the ANZAC parade, the War Memorial and Parliament House.

There are plenty of walking tracks at Mt. Ainslie for those who like to adventure on foot, alongside picnic areas for visitors who prefer to snack while they explore.

On your travels, you may encounter some Aussie wildlife, including kangaroos, birdlife, and maybe even the odd wombat.
